Pranayam and Meditation

According to the Sanskrit language, “Prana” resembles life and “Yama” is control. Hence, Pranayama is the "extension of breath or the life force." It is popularly known as ‘The Yoga of breathing'. It is a spiritual technique of achieving concentration through breath inhalation and exhalation exercises. Pranayama helps in breath regulation. It is a central component of Yoga. Pranayama involves various breathing exercises carried out in specific patterns. The follower has to purposely inhale, exhale, and hold their breath in a particular sequence.

Pranayama has many benefits due to the healing effects of breathing exercises and mindfulness. In Yoga, Pranayama is used along with Asanas and meditation (Dhyana).

Understanding Pranayama

It is an ancient breathing technique. The practitioner learns to control every breath and hold's time, duration, and frequency. This helps connect our body and mind, increases the oxygen supply to the body, and removes toxins. Examples of different breathing techniques are:

  • Nadishodhana (alternate nostril breathing)
  • Ujjayi (victorious breath)
  • Bhramari (female honeybee humming breath)
  • Bastrika (bellows breath)

These breathing exercises can be practiced either while performing yoga poses, meditating, or on their own.

Meditation is a popular technique to get freedom from unexpected attacks of stress and depression.

The focus of a sincere practitioner is always to live in the present and analyze changes taking place within and outside the body. Meditation is not simply sitting in silence with a particular body posture, but it is a philosophical technique of transporting our mind and soul to the next level of human consciousness.

Meditation is a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation can produce a deep state of relaxation and help to calm your mind. During meditation, you focus on attention and eliminate all the cluttered thoughts that caused stress. The result is enhanced physical and emotional well-being.
