Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical Spondylosis is an age-related disorder. It occurs due to the decrease in lubrication and flexibility of the cervical area's bones, intervertebral discs, and ligaments. Commonly known side effect of Cervical Spondylosisis neck pain. Spondylosis leads to formation of bony projection along with the edges. Most people suffering from Cervical Spondylosis are usually above 45 years of age as Cervical Spondylosis is closely related to age.

As our age progresses, the discs joining cervical vertebras in our cervical area become fragile & rigid. It results in intense neck pain and stiffness around neck-shoulder area. Some people facerestricted flexibility and mobility issues. One of the preventives as well as curative method for this is Yoga. It helps to relieve stiffness, painand improves flexibility. Practicing Yoga regularly treats the problem naturally and offers long-term relief. The Asanas suggested are effective for permanent eradication of the reasons that lead to Cervical Spondylosis.

Causes of Cervical Spondylosis:

With age, the vertebras and ligaments of our spinal column (back bone) starts degenerating (wear & tear) gradually. It is the primary cause of Cervical Spondylosis. Some other common reasons are Dehydrated discs, herniated discs, stiffed ligaments, bone spurs, injuries, overuse of neck muscles, straining occupation and hobbies, smoking, genetic history, sedentary lifestyle & overweight.

Role of scapula in Cervical Spondylosis

Scapula plays very important role in maintaining cervical health. Position of your shoulder and neck is depending upon the position of scapula, if your scapula is protruded then shoulder would become rounded hence excess strain would be created on cervical vertebras. Gradually due to incorrect positioning of scapula-shoulder-head, cervical lordotic curvature gets flattens which causes disc degeneration. Hence your cervical muscles will remain in continuous strain, hence neck pain arises.

Hence for curing cervical spondylosis, rectification of scapular position is important and that’s why in the classical pose’s teacher suggest back bend to release neck tension. However, every individual is different, so as their body needs, life style, thought process are varies person to person. That’s why treatment should also be different and unique for each individual, based on individual’s body need. In Aadyam we refer diagnostics test like x-ray, MRI to design specific asana for each individual. If there is loss of cervical lordosis curvature, we prescribe back bending asanas to restore normal curvature. But if there is exaggerated lordosis then we prescribe forward bending asanas to stretch neck muscles for rectifying of cervical curvature. Line of treatment in cervical spondylosis cases, we consider thoracic spine too, because spine is intact within and we should take care of thoracic part also. Flexibility of cervical spine is depending upon thoracic spine and rib cage, so while treating cervical spondylosis we work on thoracic part in body.
